Rodrigo Burssed – Assistant Project Manager

Q. Can you share your journey from Brazil to the U.S. and how you entered the construction industry?
A. I came to the USA to be the best man and play guitar at my friend’s wedding, a moment I had been looking forward to for a long time. After the celebration, I was pleasantly surprised when several people reached out to me about potential opportunities in the construction industry. Having gained some experience in this field back in Brazil, I was intrigued by the idea of continuing my career in a new country.
The prospect of joining the construction industry excited me, as it offered the chance to apply my skills in a different context while also learning about new practices and technologies. I was eager to immerse myself in the American construction industry, where I could both contribute my expertise and grow professionally. This unexpected outreach not only opened doors for me but also marked the beginning of an exciting new chapter in my life.
Q. What motivated you to pursue a career in construction?
A. I am highly motivated by challenges, and the construction industry is filled with them on a daily basis. Every project presents unique obstacles that require innovative solutions, teamwork, and adaptability. Embracing these challenges not only fuels my passion for the work but also allows me to grow both personally and professionally. Each day in construction is an opportunity to overcome difficulties and achieve new milestones, making the work both rewarding and exciting.
Q. What challenges did you face when transitioning to the construction industry in the U.S., and how did you overcome them?
A. The language barrier was my first significant challenge. The construction vocabulary is highly specialized, and I recognized the importance of mastering it to succeed in the industry. Therefore, I dedicated an entire year to studying and improving my English language skills. This commitment involved not only learning technical terms but also practicing effective communication with colleagues and clients. By immersing myself in the language and the nuances of the construction field, I was able to enhance my confidence and fluency, ultimately enabling me to contribute more effectively to my team.
Q. How has your experience working with Bald Hill Builders been, and what makes this company stand out to you?
A. My experience with Bald Hill has grown and expanded since I started working here. I successfully delivered a project called “St. Therese,” which featured exceptional quality control and a “zero” punch list. Bald Hill provided me with the opportunity to expand my knowledge in construction by overseeing all trades as an Assistant Project Manager.
As an immigrant working for a woman-owned company (WBE) and being recognized with a Rising Star Award in my first year, I feel that anything is possible, regardless of where I come from or the language barrier I face. So far, my experience with Bald Hill Builders has exceeded my expectations.
Q. Can you talk about a project you’ve worked on at Bald Hill Builders that you are particularly proud of?
A. I’m proud to be part of the ongoing collaboration with TND, The Neighborhood Developers, on the project located at 170 Cottage Street in Chelsea. This presents another significant challenge due to the complexity of the job site, from the foundation to the intricate 3D building façade. This project is scheduled to be completed in 2025, and I can’t wait to see the completed building that will provide affordable housing to many Chelsea residents.
Q. What does inclusion mean to you in the workplace, and how have you seen it reflected at Bald Hill Builders?
Although it can be difficult for some people to understand, inclusion at Bald Hill Builders means real inclusion—not just words on paper. Here at BHB, there are no barriers, and I can pursue any role I desire; it’s all up to me. I believe we truly don’t know anyone until we give them the opportunity to show what they are capable of delivering. At Bald Hill Builders, I was given that opportunity, and I consider it the best opportunity I’ve had so far. In addition to work at BHB, I’ve been invited to all social activities, which have introduced me to American culture—such as food, sports, and entertainment. I feel very welcome and have a strong sense of belonging.
Q. How has your Brazilian heritage influenced your work ethic and approach in the construction industry?
The area I come from in Brazil has over 11 million people, in an area comparable in size to the city of Boston. This means that one must study hard and excel to be competitive. I dedicated a lot of time to my education to secure a good position. Staying informed, being a trustworthy partner, and following established processes are part of my heritage.
As a Construction IT professional with more than 30 courses and certifications, I have gained expertise in building smart houses and smart cities with a focus on technology and energy efficiency. Given the global energy crisis, all sectors are now investing in energy-efficient products and construction practices. Earning my Phius Certified Builder license (CPHB) enhanced my knowledge of technology, which is why I am so passionate about construction—from the foundation to the automatic shutdown of lights.
Q. What aspects of Brazilian culture do you bring to your work, and how do you think it contributes to the team dynamic?
A. Being helpful, caring about others, and maintaining a charismatic presence while building genuine relationships with coworkers are fundamental values I brought from my Brazilian culture. I believe that by introducing these principles into the team dynamic, the environment becomes more collaborative and supportive. This natural flow not only fosters strong connections among team members but also enhances communication and trust. As a result, the chances of success increase significantly. By embracing and sharing my cultural background, I aim to contribute to a workplace where everyone feels valued and motivated to achieve our common goals.
Q. How important do you think it is for construction companies to embrace diversity and inclusion, and why?
Construction companies play a vital role here in Massachusetts, attracting individuals from many countries who come in search of new opportunities. It is crucial for these companies to embrace diversity and inclusion, as the industry is enriched by the contributions of people from various backgrounds and cultures. Fostering an inclusive environment ensures that each worker feels valued and respected, promoting a sense of belonging among all team members.
Q. What advice would you give to other immigrants looking to start a career in construction in the U.S.?
Never give up. Always be true to yourself, engage with others, and continue studying the language. Strive to do your best in everything you undertake. Remember, there are people around you who are paying attention to your actions. You never know who might offer you a job or refer you to an open position based on their observations of your work ethic and attitude. Building strong relationships and demonstrating dedication can lead to unexpected opportunities. Every interaction counts, and your commitment to excellence can make a lasting impression on those who may help advance your career.
Q. What impact do you hope to have on the construction industry, particularly regarding diversity and inclusion?
Speaking three languages helps me establish better communication with people on the job site, allowing me to build closer relationships with those who are often anxious about language barriers. I love seeing their happy faces when they realize they can communicate more easily with the general contractor’s staff. I always encourage people to think ahead, whether in Portuguese, Spanish, or English. My goal is to make a positive impact on the construction industry by caring for disadvantaged individuals.
