Employee Spotlight Q&A

Rosana DeLima – Assistant Superintendent

A. arrived in the USA 23 years ago and, after starting a family, remained focused on
my goal of pursuing higher education. I worked various jobs to support myself while
attending school and eventually graduated from UMass Boston. Initially, I joined a
construction equipment rental company, where I was uncertain about my career
path. However, I met a Brazilian colleague who encouraged me to join his siding
company. This opportunity was a turning point for me, as I discovered a deep
passion for the construction industry and its processes. This experience ignited my
enthusiasm for learning about materials and construction techniques, shaping my
career trajectory.

A. My motivation to pursue a career in construction stems from a deep passion for the
field and a strong desire for challenge. Construction continuously presents
opportunities for learning and problem-solving, which keeps me engaged and
motivated. I thrive on the ability to contribute to meaningful projects, help others,
and grow professionally. The dynamic nature of the industry aligns perfectly with my
drive for personal and career development.

A. Transitioning to the construction industry in the U.S. presented two main challenges
for me. First, I needed to build confidence in my own abilities and recognize my
competence in the field. Second, the language barrier was a significant hurdle,
though it has improved over time. To overcome these challenges, I focused on
building self-assurance by acknowledging my strengths and contributions.
Additionally, I embraced a mindset of continuous learning, actively improving my
language skills and familiarizing myself with industry processes. This approach
helped me navigate the transition effectively and integrate successfully into the
industry.

A. My experience at Bald Hill Builders has been exceptional. I am grateful for the
continuous support and encouragement from both my superiors and colleagues.
What truly stands out about the company is the collaborative environment and the
emphasis on professional growth, which has significantly contributed to my job
satisfaction and success.

A. One project I’m particularly proud of at Bald Hill Builders is the Beaver Country Day
School renovation. This was my first project where I took on an oversight role, and it
was a significant learning experience for me. Although it was a smaller project, it
presented challenges in terms of work conditions and tight deadlines. Successfully
managing these aspects not only helped build my confidence but also
demonstrated my ability to handle complex situations effectively.

A. Inclusion in the workplace means being able to be my authentic self while feeling
supported and valued. It also means supporting my colleagues’ authenticity, origin,
and personal challenges. It allows me to express my ideas openly and confidently,
knowing that my contributions are respected while respecting and making
space for my colleagues. At Bald Hill Builders, I’ve seen this reflected in the
company’s commitment to fostering an environment where diverse perspectives
are embraced and everyone is encouraged to support one another. This inclusive
culture enhances teamwork and empowers us all to excel.

A. “My Brazilian heritage has significantly shaped my work ethic and approach in the
construction industry. Brazil has a strong cultural emphasis on community,
resilience, and adaptability, which I bring to every project I undertake. The value
placed on teamwork and strong interpersonal relationships in Brazil translates into
a collaborative approach in my work, ensuring effective communication and
cohesion with team members and clients. Additionally, the resourcefulness and
problem-solving skills homed in a diverse and dynamic environment like Brazil
enable me to tackle challenges creatively and efficiently. Overall, my heritage
instills a sense of dedication and flexibility that drives me to deliver high-quality
results while fostering a positive work environment.”

A. One key aspect of Brazilian culture that I bring to my work is the emphasis on strong
interpersonal relationships and teamwork. In Brazil, building a sense of community
and mutual support is highly valued, and I apply this by fostering a collaborative
atmosphere within the team. I help create a more cohesive and motivated team by encouraging open communication and mutual respect. This cultural approach enhances our ability to effectively address challenges, leverage diverse perspectives, and ultimately achieve better project outcomes.

A. Embracing diversity and inclusion fosters creativity and innovation by
incorporating different perspectives and experiences. Diverse and inclusive teams
tend to be more collaborative. Opening their potential talent pool and their ability to
attract the best of the best companies will benefit from the potential everyone can
bring over. I believe that everyone deserves an opportunity. You can’t judge a book
by its cover. We can be bright, we can be smart, but nothing is done alone. A team
of diversity brings the best to their company.

A. My advice to other immigrants looking to start a career in construction in the U.S. is
to remain persistent and stay committed to your goals. Embrace opportunities for
learning and professional growth, and don’t be afraid to seek out mentors who can
offer guidance and support. Building a successful career requires dedication,
adaptability, and resilience, so stay focused on your dreams and keep pushing
forward despite any challenges you may face.

A. I hope to significantly impact the construction industry by championing diversity
and inclusion. My goal is to continue creating an inclusive environment where
individuals from all backgrounds feel valued and empowered to contribute their
unique perspectives. I also hope to continue inspiring others to chase their dreams
in the U.S and not be discouraged by obstacles. By fostering an inclusive workplace
culture, and supporting mentorship and development opportunities, I aim to drive
positive change that not only enriches the industry but also sets a standard for
future generations.
